ANANTAPUR, JULY 11. The owner of a rice mill and a private moneylender, Chandrasekhar Reddy, of Muddalapuram village in Kudair mandal, on Saturday waived loans taken from him by 12 farmers. The loans and interests waived reportedly amount to Rs. 1.7 lakhs. Reports said Mr. Reddy tore the promissory notes signed by farmers before a crowd of villagers. He told the villagers that he had been moved by the farmers' plight due to prolonged drought conditions and had decided to lead an effort to help them. The 12 farmers had borrowed between Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 40,000 from him. However, reports also claimed that the moneylender had received threatening calls from naxalites belonging to People's War to waive the loans or face consequences.
