Lawyers want APCOCA to go

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh State Committee of Indian Association of Lawyers has urged the State Government not to extend the Andhra Pradesh Control of Organised Crime Act (APCOCA) ordinance to fight organised crime, which expires in October this year.

A meeting of the association, held here on Saturday under the presidentship of senior High Court advocate, C. Padmanabha Reddy, further wanted that the ordinance be completely withdrawn in view of its anti-democratic nature. Moreover, the Indian Penal Code was more sufficient than any other law like POTA and APCOCA.

The committee also sought immediate measures to constitute Magistrate Courts as per the Cr.P.C. amendment in the agency areas as announced by the Government. It welcomed the statement of Union Law Minister, H. R. Bharadwaj, regarding abolition of fast track courts and to constitute regular courts in their place. At the same time, it opposed any move for withdrawal of the National Judicial Commission.

The general secretary, Bommagani Prabhakar, reviewed the activities of the organisation. The meeting paid homage to T. Hara Gopal Rao, one of the general secretaries, who died recently.

Inter advanced supplementary results today

HYDERABAD: Results of the Intermediate advanced supplementary examination will be released on Monday at 10.30 a.m. They will be available on Internet soon after on the websites - http://examresults.aponline.gov.in, http://aponline.gov.in and http://196.12.55.10/inter2.

Students can know the result by dialling 1100 from any fixed BSNL line in the State. They will also be available on the Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS). Students in Hyderabad have to dial 1255225 or 22222255.

Callers from outside Hyderabad have to prefix 9540 to these numbers. Users of CellOne should dial 12506.

Mala Mahanadu welcomes quota for Muslims

HYDERABAD: Mala Mahanadu while welcoming the State Government's decision to provide five per cent reservation for Muslims has criticised the BJP and the ABVP for opposing the decision.

The Mala Mahanadu president, P. V. Rao, in a statement on Sunday said Dalits in the State would back the Government in giving shape to proposals aimed at implementing reservation.

He said a State-level Dalit convention would be organised here on July 22 with representatives of the SC, ST organisations, Muslim minorities, Dalit Christians and MLAs attending. It would suggest steps to be taken by the Government for improving the lot of the poorer sections. The resolutions adopted at the convention would be submitted to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

Kishen Reddy to lead team to UN

HYDERABAD: The BJP MLA, G. Kishen Reddy, will lead a delegation of World Youth Council Against Terrorism (WYCAT) to the United Nations to meet the Secretary-General in November and present a memorandum on the draft policy with regard to utilising youth power to eradicate terrorism.

Mr. Reddy, who is the international chairman of WYCAT, attended the two-day international conference on `Youth Against Terrorism', organised by WYCAT and the Union of Bulgarian Commandos at Sofia, Bulgaria, on July 9 and 10. In a statement here, he said the meet unanimously resolved to fight terrorism and establish global peace. "The conference also resolved to complement the efforts of international organisations and the UN to end terrorism."

Ninety-eight delegates from 32 countries, including 10 from India, participated in the conference, which was inaugurated by the President of Republic of Bulgaria, Georgi Paravanoy.

Farm workers' conference at Bhadrachalam

HYDERABAD: The three-day 23rd State conference of the Andhra Pradesh Agricultural Workers' Association will be held at Bhadrachalam in Khammam district. A meeting of the preparatory committee will be organised on July 25, P. Ramayya, MLA and president, and B.Venkat, general secretary, said in a statement here on Sunday. The conference assumes significance in the context of new Congress Governments assuming office at the Centre and in the State. It will evolve strategies to persuade the Governments to implement the election promises made.

Rythu Coolie Sangham meeting

HYDERABAD: The general council of the Andhra Pradesh Rythu Coolie Sangham meeting at Suryapet, in Nalgonda district, on July 14 will chart out strategies for strengthening the farmers' struggles besides discussing the crisis in the farm sector in the context of rising suicides. It will recommend steps to be taken by the Government to restore the confidence of ryots. The meet will also seek implementation of land reforms and allotment of land to the tiller, the sangham leaders, G. V. Raghavulu, president, B. Satynarayana, general secretary, and A. Venkat Rao, treasurer, said in a statement issued here on Sunday.

Leaders from the State Human Rights Forum, Janashakti, Progressive Organisation of Women and Stree Vimukti, besides those from the sangham will be among the speakers.

Teachers' union office-bearers

HYDERABAD: B. Mohan Reddy and P. Sudhakar Reddy have been re-elected as president and general secretary of the Progressive Recognised Teachers' Union (PRTU) at the State council meeting held in Hyderabad.

A statement from the PRTU said that 20 associated presidents, 38 vice-presidents, 41 secretaries and 101 executive members were elected. More than 5,000 teachers from across the State participated in the meeting.

Union leader hacked to death

ANANTAPUR: The district vice-president of the Construction Workers' Union, Ramamurthy, 49, was hacked to death by unidentified persons suspected to be pseudo-naxalites in Dharmavaram town late on Saturday night.

According to the police, about seven persons waylaid and attacked Ramamurthy with hunting sickles near Chowdeshwari temple, when the latter was on his way home in Lonikota locality after completing the day's work in Kalajyothi circle. He died on the spot.

Ex-chief of Central Customs Board dead

HYDERABAD: B. R. Reddy, former Chairman of the Central Board of Excise and Customs, passed away on Sunday morning, following a prolonged illness. He was 72 and leaves behind two sons and a daughter.

An Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the 1956 batch, he served as Principal Collector, Chennai, and had a long stint in the Board as member before retiring in 1991.

In a press release, the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, expressed grief and conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to members of the bereaved family.

Women dies in

roof collapse

KURNOOL: Two women died in roof collapse at S. Kulur village in Gospadu mandal on Saturday night. According to reports, the roof of the building caved in due to heavy rain. The women, identified as Subhashini, 24 and Sumathi, 19, died of severe head injuries. One more woman sustained injuries.

Special clinics

TIRUPATI: The SVIMS Hospital will conduct clinics for special disorders at select timings. The endocrinology department will be conducting a paediatric endocrinology clinic at 2 p.m. every Tuesday for children (below 14 years), while the nephrology wing will hold a high blood pressure clinic at 2 p.m. on every Friday, a release said.

Volvo service

NELLORE: The Nellore MLA, Anam Vivekananda Reddy, inaugurated the air-conditioned Volvo bus service from Nellore to Hyderabad, at a function at the RTC main complex here on Sunday. Senior RTC officials were present.

Club's gesture

ANANTAPUR: The Anantapur MLA, B. Narayana Reddy, handed over Rs. 5,000 to Sunkumar, a student of a private engineering college at Gooty, on behalf of Anantapur Club at a `tambola' programme organised in the club premises. The club secretary, B.M. Gandhi Reddy and the Ladies' Club secretary Y. Vani were present.

quota sought

ANANTAPUR: The O.C. Aikya Sankshema Sangham urged the State and Central Governments to cancel reservation based on social backwardness and go for quota based on economic backwardness. The sangham president, G. Karunakar Reddy, also requested the State Government to fill more than two lakh vacancies in the State immediately.

Bodies found

on rail track

CUDDAPAH: The bodies of a couple, suspected to be labourers, were found on the railway track near the MRO office in Kodur town on Sunday, according to the police. The man, clad in a grey-coloured shirt and blue-coloured lungi and the women dressed in a yellow saree and a green blouse, could be husband and wife, the police suspect. A case was registered.

Rain in Nellore

NELLORE: Some parts of Nellore district experienced rainfall on Sunday, with Chejerla recording highest rainfall of 7.64 cm, followed by Jaladanki with 6.62 cm, Venkatachalam (5.68 cm), Duttaluru (3.46 cm), Bogole (3.30 cm) and Gudur (3.14 cm).

Chain-snatching

NELLORE: Unidentified culprits snatched gold chains from two housewives who were sleeping in the compound of their residences in Atmakur town of Nellore district in the early hours of Sunday. The stolen property is said to be worth about Rs. 25,000. Police are investigating.

TIRUPATI: The eighth anniversary of the cultural organisation, Vasavi Kalanikethan, was observed in the form of State-level competitions for children here on Sunday. Contests were held in music, dance and painting.

Chalo University

NELLORE: The district unit of All-India Students Federation (AISF) will start a campaign of `Chalo University' on July 15, as a protest against the decision of S.V. University authorities to scrap the degree supplementary examinations and to permit the examinations only for this year.
