Lawyers want APCOCA to go Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh State Committee of Indian Association of Lawyers has urged the State Government not to extend the Andhra Pradesh Control of Organised Crime Act (APCOCA) ordinance to fight organised crime, which expires in October this year. A meeting of the association, held here on Saturday under the presidentship of senior High Court advocate, C. Padmanabha Reddy, further wanted that the ordinance be completely withdrawn in view of its anti-democratic nature. Moreover, the Indian Penal Code was more sufficient than any other law like POTA and APCOCA. The committee also sought immediate measures to constitute Magistrate Courts as per the Cr.P.C. amendment in the agency areas as announced by the Government. It welcomed the statement of Union Law Minister, H. R. Bharadwaj, regarding abolition of fast track courts and to constitute regular courts in their place. At the same time, it opposed any move for withdrawal of the National Judicial Commission. The general secretary, Bommagani Prabhakar, reviewed the activities of the organisation. The meeting paid homage to T. Hara Gopal Rao, one of the general secretaries, who died recently.
