Heavy rain disrupts life in Bijapur

By Our Staff Correspondent

The scene after Bijapur experienced a heavy downpour on Sunday.

BIJAPUR, JULY 11. Heavy rain lashed Bijapur city and other parts of the district disrupting life on Sunday. Power supply was disrupted at many places as the rain intensified in the afternoon. The low-lying areas in the city were inundated following several hours of heavy rainfall.

Many drains in the city got clogged, causing rainwater to flow onto the roads and disrupted vehicular traffic. Vehicles, especially two-wheelers, were hardly seen on the roads. Bijapur city received 20 mm rainfall today, the meteorological department said.

Lightning:

Sanju Poolsingh Rathod (14) died at Somadevarahatti Tanda near here when he was struck by lightning. His relative, Gajabai, was hurt. The incident occurred when they were on their way to Takkalaki Tanda, the police said.

Our Staff Correspondent reports from Bidar:

It rained in parts of Bidar district on Saturday night and Sunday, bringing some relief to the farmers here. Reports said that Humnabad and Basavakalyan received an average of 40 mm of rain while Aurad, Bhalki and Bidar taluks received around 25 mm of rainfaill.

Till Saturday, there was a 56 per cent shortage of rainfall across the district. As a result, less than half the cultivable land in the district had been sown for the kharif season.

The situation was similar to that of 1972, when a severe drought affected the district and people migrated to Goa, Madikeri and Mumbai. Agriculture scientists had released directives asking people to cultivate crops that required less water and not to sow green gram and black gram. Several associations have demanded that Bidar be declared a drought-affected district.
