Legislators demand more water for kharif crop

By Our Staff Correspondent

BELLARY, JULY 11. K.C. Kondaiah, MLC, and M. Shankar Reddy, former MLA, have urged the Government to change the decision of the Irrigation Consultative Committee (ICC) and ensure the release of adequate water into the high and low-level canals on the right bank of the Tungabhadra dam.

Speaking to presspersons here on Sunday, they expressed concern over the meagre allocation of water to the high and low level canals.

They felt that the water was not enough to cultivate the kharif crop.

The ICC, which met recently with M.P. Prakash, the Minister for Revenue and Parliamentary Affairs, resolved to allocate 12.380 tmcft of water for the high level canal and 13.030 tmcft for the low level canal anticipating an inflow of 155 tmcft into the reservoir.

The ICC had also resolved that water would be let into the canals till November 30th.

Mr. Kondaiah said that 1.80 lakh acres and 1.08 lakh acres were irrigated through the high level and low level canals respectively in Sirguppa and Bellary taluks.

He said that the Minister and other elected representatives had failed to realise that the water allocated was insufficient.

He said adequate water had been allocated in the past two years even when the reservoir had very little inflow.

He also said that since the inflow had improved this year, adequate water should be allocated for the benefit of the farmers.

Mr. Reddy wanted the Government to prioritise on the dry-cum-wet lands (DCW) when the water was released.

He felt that the DCW farmers were deprived of water for the past two years owing to water scarcity in the reservoir.

Mr. Kondaiah said that proper management would help in providing water to at least one crop and the authorities concerned should take steps in this regard.
