BANGALORE, JULY 11. Madras Engineering Group became the first team to qualify for the knock-out semi-final phase of the V. Karunkaran & D.S Murthy memorial all India inter-club hockey tournament. MEG completed its Pool D fixtures with an undefeated record beating Hindustan Aeronautics Limited 3-1 at the KSHA stadium here on Sunday. Penalty corner specialist Bhikshal Bhenra banged in two goals (15th and 45th) while Elizar Ekka slotted one in between Bhengra's brace. Ekka scored in the 41st minute. HAL's only scoring effort came in the 27th minute with Anil Anand being the scorer. The tournament was marred with some rough play in the Army XI versus Southern Railway match. Two players who came to blows on the field were awarded red cards and suspended. The players to get the red cards were Jagjit Singh of Army XI and Diwakar of Southern Railway both of whom sparked off a free-for-all melee. The duration of the suspension will however be announced after a committee meeting to be held later. The match ended with a 1-1 draw and Suresh Kumar scored for Army XI off a penalty corner in the 19th minute and Diwakar brought up the equaliser for Southern Railway also off a penalty corner in the 35th minute. Earlier in the first match, Pioneer Corps Training Centre and Sports Authority of India shared six goals. Cyprian Aind scored all three for PCTC with his first and third coming off corner conversions. Cyprian scored in the 13th, 44th and 69th minutes. The scorers for SAI were Navneeswaran (36th), Ravi (45th) and Chengappa (59th). The other three semi-finalists will be spotted after Monday's matches. Our Special Correspondent
