Top players face stiff competition

SHIMOGA July 11. The first round of the National invitational Fide rated chess tournament opened at the Adichunchanagirimath Samudaya Bhavan here on Sunday under the auspices of the Nalanda Chess Association.

Some of the rated players faced stiff competition and settled for draws. Satwik M. of Bangalore drew against Beno Glad (2045) of Tamil Nadu while Stany G.A. of Shimoga defeated Shruthi K.

Shrishti J. Shetty of Shimoga drew against Sagar Shah (2043) of Mumbai while N. Ravindraan of Bangalore drew against Krishna Udupa of Shimoga.

In the first round rated player Aravind Sastry (2339) had a tough fight with Kedar Umesh Vaze, the Karnataka State under-19 champion. S. Sanjay (2319) of Income Tax Department defeated Kishan Gangolli of Shimoga while the third seed M.S. Thej Kumar defeated Vadiraj Kulkarni of Dharwad.

Other results: Vinod Kumar bt Vinay Kurtakoti, Y.G. Vijendra bt H.V. Lakshmi, P. Praveen Prasad bt Mahesh Ved, Sriram Sarja bt Manu, Harsha Bondade bt Nagashree H. Krishna, Naveen Hegde bt Nisha Patkar, Krishna Udupa drew with Ravindran.
