Spotted deer found dead

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, JULY 11. A chital, a species of spotted deer in the Guindy scrub jungle and the Madras Christian College campus at Tambaram, was found dead near the Chellappa Gardens at Kotturpuram on Sunday morning.

Satish Velayudhan, a resident of the area, spotted the deer around 6 a.m. and alerted the Blue Cross. Directed by them to contact the Forest Department, he did so and the carcass was removed later.

Officials said chitals die due to various reasons like old age, food poisoning or road accidents.

The residents wonder how the deer was found dead there. "We have never seen a spotted deer within our premises at Kotturpuram," said Sathish.

Last October, a spotted deer was killed after being hit by an MTC bus near the Raj Bhavan on Sardar Patel Road. The animal had reportedly strayed from the Guindy National Park.

Spotted deer and blackbucks are found mainly in the 270-hectare Guindy National Park.

In August last, an adult male spotted deer, which fell into an open dry well near Velachery, was rescued by the Fire Service and later released into the Guindy National Park.It is common to see the animals feeding on the shrubs along Taramani as they stray out of the Raj Bhavan and Guindy National Park and some of them get run over by speeding vehicles.

Spotted deer are also commonly sighted in groups near Velachery, Ekkattuthangal, the Adyar river bank stretch, Anna University and Highways Research Station.
