dated July 13, 1954: New scheme for rural uplift

A new venture in the process of nation-building will begin next month when the Welfare Extension Projects sponsored by the Central Social Welfare Board start operating all over India. Three hundred such projects covering about 6,000 villages and a population of about six million are proposed to be launched on August 15 in all the States, thus ushering in a new movement of social welfare on a comprehensive scale. The Central Social Welfare Board, which was set up as an autonomous body by the Government of India on the recommendations of the Planning Commission, started functioning from the middle of last year and so far its principal activity has been to find out the requirements of voluntary welfare organisations and provide assistance at points where such assistance can help in improving and expanding their activities. The Board has so far assisted 881 institutions dealing with the welfare of women, children, delinquents, etc., and the amount granted as aid is of the order of Rs. 27 lakhs. Apart from providing assistance to the existing institutions, the Board has decided to promote directly, through voluntary institutions, welfare schemes in areas where some long-felt wants require to be urgently removed. To begin with, the Board proposes to sponsor 300 such projects.
