Probe Pappu Yadav's movements, CBI told

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JULY 12. The Supreme Court today directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe the movements of the former Lok Sabha member, Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, from March 16 to May 3, when he was seen in the Madhepura Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar.

Not satisfied with the report of the Bihar Home Secretary on Mr. Yadav's movements while in custody, a three-member Bench, comprising Justice N. Santosh Hegde, Justice S.B. Sinha and Justice A.K. Mathur, asked the CBI to submit its report within a week pertaining to his hospitalisation at the Patna Medical College Hospital and also report on his visits outside the hospital between March 16, when he was arrested, and May 3, when he was seen in Madhepura.

The Bench came down heavily on the Bihar Government for giving VIP treatment to Mr. Yadav in the Patna jail after his arrest following cancellation of his bail by the Supreme Court on March 12.

The Patna High Court had granted bail to Mr. Yadav in the case of the murder of trade union leader Ajit Sarkar. The Supreme Court cancelled it following a plea by the CBI.

The Bench asked the CBI to inform the court on how many rooms Mr. Yadav Yadav was occupying in the general ward of the jail where he was accommodated on March 16 because of non-vacancy in the prisoner's ward. The CBI was also asked to inform whether there was any vacancy in the prisoner's ward thereafter. The court also wondered how Mr. Yadav had gone to the Purnea constituency from where he contested the election to the Lok Sabha.

The Bihar Government Counsel, B.B. Singh, told the court that he had gone to file his nomination papers on the orders of the Patna High Court.
