Rifle misfires, two cops injured

Kakinada: Two Andhra Pradesh Special Police battalion personnel - Nakka John and B.V. Satyanarayana - received splinter wounds in abdomen when a rifle misfired from a constable who was practising shooting at Peddapuram firing range, 20 km from here, on Monday. They were admitted to Government general hospital where their condition is stated to be out of danger.

Civic chief manhandled

ANANTAPUR: Miscreants led by a hotel owner, Siva Reddy, allegedly attacked the house of the Municipal Commissioner of Dharmavaram, Ajay Krishore, at Dharmavaram on Sunday night.

According to reports, the civic body served a notice on the hotel for running the roof garden illegally. Siva Reddy went to the Commissioner's house along with his men and ransacked furniture and tried to manhandle him. The police arrested Siva Reddy and others on Monday.

Tension over tribal girl's death

ELURU: Tension prevailed at Buttayagudem in West Godavari district following the death of a tribal girl in a tribal welfare residential school at Busarajupalli in the agency. K. Varalakshmi, a ninth class student, reportedly died while undergoing treatment at the primary health centre.

Even as the PHC authorities stated that the girl died of a cardiac problem, leaders of the Student Federation of India said a snakebite could have resulted in her death. A dharna was organised by the SFI in front of the PHC demanding an enquiry into the student's death and payment of ex-gratia to the victim's parents.

Official found dead near haystack

NELLORE: Discovery of the body of an Assistant Engineer of Irrigation, T. Bhaskar Reddy, next to a haystack at Kondpuram on Sunday has baffled police circles here. He was found dead after returning from Kavali where he went on an official visit for discussions with departmental staff. Senior police officials visited the spot on Monday.

Survey on single bulb users

HYDERABAD: The Government will take a decision on supply of free power to single bulb households soon, the Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, has said. He told N. Janardhan Reddy (TDP) in the Assembly on Monday that a survey was being carried out to find out the number of such households. He, however, said there was no proposal to supply free power to domestic consumers to a certain limit of consumption or to give subsidy to consumers up to 50 units of power.

Speaker disallows motions

Hyderabad: The Speaker, K.R. Suresh Reddy, on Monday disallowed three adjournment notices in the Assembly served by the TDP, the CPI(M) and the BJP seeking to highlight the continued drought, supply of spurious seeds and non-release of Krishna water from Alamatti dam even as members stalled proceedings for sometime.

Naxalite surrenders

ADILABAD: Madavi Sheku alias Azad alias Linganna, a member of Mangi dalam of the People's War (PW), surrendered to the Superintendent of Police, Kripanand Tripathi Ujela, here on Monday. He was involved in five exchanges of fire with the police and a case of burning of earth-moving machinery. Linganna said he was disillusioned with the PW and wanted to serve his ageing parents.

BJP Mahila Morcha plea

HYDERABAD: The State BJP Mahila Morcha has asked the Government to implement the pre-election promises it has made to women. The political resolution adopted at the meeting of office-bearers of the morcha held here on Monday said the budget allocations were not in accordance with the pre-poll promises.

It said that the prices were likely to increase due to the inflationary effect of the Union budget and wanted them to be arrested. The meeting, among others, demanded that pension for widows and physically challenged persons be increased from Rs.75 to Rs.225, matching grant to DWCRA groups to be hiked from Rs.10,000 to Rs.25,000 and sales tax concession on gas cylinders under the Deepam scheme.

The morcha president, Y. Swaroopa Rani, the State BJP president, N. Indrasena Reddy, the vice-president, T. Vijayalaxmi, and the former Union Minister, Bandaru Dattatreya, also spoke.

Srinivas appoints secretaries

Hyderabad: The Pradesh Congress Committee president, D. Srinivas, on Monday appointed T. Sammi Reddy, G. Rudra Raju, J.B. Gajendra Rao, P. Pandu, S. Chandra Reddy and N. Shiv Ram secretaries of the party. Earlier, addressing a meeting of functionaries at Gandhi Bhavan, he urged them to undertake enrolment of membership seriously. The party must be strengthened further and programmes of the Congress Government and the party must be effectively taken to people, he said.

14 DSPs promoted

HYDERABAD: The Government on Monday issued orders promoting 14 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) to the posts of Assistant Superintendent of Police. The promotees were: G. Sampath Kumar Reddy, B. Shyam Rao, M. Suryanarayan Reddy, J. Alexander, A. Saibaba, P.V. Kanna Rao, BVSK Bhaskar raju, P. Madhusudhan, B. Buchiram Reddy, G. Mogilaiah, Ch. Ravindar Reddy, .V. Venkat Reddy, B.R. Kumar and B. Nandakumar.

10 cm rainfall in Bapatla

Hyderabad: Bapatla recorded 10 cm and Eturnagaram 8 cm as heavy rain lashed many parts of the State on Monday. Nalgonda, Palair bridge, Perur and Piduguralla recorded 5 cm each. Light to moderate rain/thundershower is likely at a few places in coastal Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema on Tuesday.

NELLORE: A meeting of office-bearers belonging to Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) and Kisan Morcha, who met here on Monday, urged the State Government to declare Nellore district drought-hit area.

They appealed to the Government to help the farming community in all respects, to reduce the fees in private and corporate educational institutions and pleaded for better employment opportunities for educated unemployed. The meeting urged the authorities to properly implement schemes pertaining to Prime Minister's Rozgar Yojana (PMRY) and demanded 90 per cent subsidy for farmers towards drip irrigation schemes.

Blasting causes

panic

NELLORE: The blasting operations in the Kandaleru reservoir of Nellore district have been causing concern among local people, in view of their large-scale intensity. Heavy stones weighing a few kilograms are almost `hurled' on nearby colony houses due to the blasting, creating a scare.

There are reports that some times, the blasting operations are resorted to without any prior intimation to colony people.

Succumbs to

injuries

NELLORE: A cleaner of a mini-lorry died while undergoing treatment at hospital on Sunday. He was injured when his vehicle rammed into a road side house at Chillakuru village of Pellakur mandal, after it came in touch with iron rods of the slab.

There were however, no injuries to inmates of the house.

Seva Samajam

golden jubilee

TIRUPATI: The spiritual programmes conducted for three days as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of Sri Ramakrishna Seva Samajam on its premises at Pudipatla on the outskirts of Tirupati concluded on Sunday.

The programmes included spiritual discourses, meditation, nagara sankeerthan, bhajans and devotional songs from dawn to dusk every day.

Special puja was performed to the images of Sri Ramakrishna, Mother Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda on the occasion.

A special souvenir was released by Swami Sukruthananda Maharaj, editor of `Sri Ramakrishna Prabha', the Telugu magazine brought out by the Chennai-based Ramakrishna Mutt. Sadhus, saints and pontiffs from various places attended the three-day meet.

Bags State rank

TIRUPATI: K. Thimma Reddy, a student of the Tirupati-based Viswam educational institution, has secured State sixth rank (who also came first in Chittoor district) at the talent search exam conducted by Dr.J.V.Rao group.

A certificate of appreciation was presented to the boy by the Irrigation Minister, Kanna Lakshminarayana, at a function organised in Hyderabad on Saturday, a release said.

Writer dead

CUDDAPAH: A writer, Vattipalle Subbarayudu (78), passed away at his house at Badvel on Monday.

Born in 1926, he compiled the biographies of poets in Rayalaseema region in a book titled `Rayalaseema Sathaka Vangmayam' and penned several books.

Handball winners

ANANTAPUR: Teams from Warangal and West Godavarai districts won the under-19 inter-district handball championship titles concluded at Kadiri in the district on Monday.

The boys team from Warangal defeated Kurnool with 20-12 goals and the West Godavari girls defeated Visakhapatnam with 16-5 in the finals.

The DIG of Anantapur Range, N. Jayarami Reddy, presented mementos to the participating teams.
