By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JULY 12. The Union Minister of State for Tourism, Renuka Chowdhury, has said that the proposal for financial assistance for the construction of a "modest convention centre" in the State can be considered under the scheme of assistance for large revenue- generating projects.

Her reply came to a letter written by Varkala Radhakrishnan, MP, regarding the development of tourist centres in the State and establishment of an international convention centre at Veli.

The Union Minister said that the State Government had been apprised of it. Ms. Chowdhury said that international convention centres had been sanctioned in the interim budget for 2004-05 for New Delhi, Mumbai, Goa and Rajasthan.

The Union Minister said that State Government and Union Territory Administrations primarily undertook the development of tourist centres.

She said that the Union Ministry extended assistance for tourism projects identified in consultation with the State Governments.

Ms. Chowdhury said that nine tourism projects totalling Rs. 84.13 crores had been sanctioned for the State during 2002-03 and three projects worth Rs. 57 crores for the year 2003-04.

Ms. Chowdhury said that the State Government had been requested to forward proposals for the development of tourist centres for consideration during the current financial year.
