By Our Staff Reporter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JULY 12. The State Government has been prevailing upon the Centre to set up a Bench of the Kerala High Court in Thiruvananthapuram. And a request in this regard was forwarded to the Union Law Ministry on June 25, 2004, by the Chief Minister himself. Informing the Assembly about the Government's efforts in this direction, the Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, said that the issue had been kept alive despite the fact that the Chief Justice was not in favour of such a proposal. The idea was mooted as early as 1958 and the Assembly had then adopted a resolution to this effect, he said, in reply to a question raised by K. Mohankumar, Congress MLA. The Union Ministry of Law had in 1999, suggested to the State Government to discuss the matter with the Chief Justice of the High Court. According to the report of the Chief Justice, such a Bench was not required in the State capital, as it would not serve public interest or help in the dispensation of law and justice. "The Government has approached the Chief Justice for a review of his report in this regard, " Mr. Antony said.
