Ayurveda College Hospital gets new facilities

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JULY 12. The century-old Ayurveda College Hospital in the city has gone in for an upgradation on a large scale with the introduction of new facilities worth more than Rs. 1 crore.

A Panchakarma theatre, a Local Area Network (LAN) and a Drugs Standardisation Unit introduced in the hospital, using Central and State funds, were inaugurated today by the Minister for Health, Kadavoor Sivadasan.

The hospital that was facing perennial water shortage now has a new drinking water supply project also, thanks to the constituency funds allocated by the local MLA and the Cooperation Minister, M.V. Raghavan.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sivadasan said that the Ayurveda system of medicine needed to rejuvenate itself by concentrating on research. Ayurveda's counterpart, Allopathy, had been very strong in this area and had progressed by leaps and bounds, the Minister remarked.

He said that with a lot of drugs being sold in the market in the guise of Ayurveda medicines, the credibility of many Ayurveda drugs were at stake. Quality control and proper identification of drugs were aspects that Ayurveda could not afford to ignore, he said.

The Minister suggested that Ayurveda drugs should be certified and a pharmacopoeia developed, so that research could be conducted on the clinical aspects of each drug. Traditional knowledge and indigenous practices of medicine should also become part of research, he said.

The Cooperation Minister, Mr. Raghavan, who presided over the function, pointed out that the authentic and age-old system of Ayurveda was being discredited by the commercial manner in which it was being practised in many resorts and tourist centres in the State. The real essence of Ayurveda and the science behind it were taking a backseat while the spotlight was on glamorising it, he said. He suggested that the concentration should be on developing newer drugs in Ayurveda.

The new Drugs Standardisation unit at the Ayurveda College hospital, has been set up with a Central aid of Rs. 75 lakhs, under the `Strengthening of State drug-testing laboratories and pharmacies' scheme. The unit will be upgraded as a Regional Pharmacopoeial Research Laboratory by tying up with the Pharmacopoeial Laboratory of Indian Medicine at Ghaziabad.
