dated July 14, 1954: A blunder, says Nehru

Prime Minister Nehru declared in Mirzapur on July 12 that the root cause of all international troubles during the last four years, whether in Korea or in South-East Asia, was the non-admittance of the People's Republic of China to the United Nations. He described the refusal to admit China into the U.N. as a serious blunder and said non-recognition of People's China was like shutting one's eyes to the reality in Asia. This was of concern to India as it had its repercussions not only on the whole of the Asian continent, but the entire world. Mr. Nehru, who was addressing a public meeting, said he felt puzzled when some people talked of quitting the U.N. if China was admitted to it. When Big Powers conducted world politics that way, he failed to understand their attitude. The world, said Mr. Nehru, was in fact passing through a critical phase. Nobody could say what would happen tomorrow. India must, therefore, be strong enough to stand on her own feet. "We must declare a battle against poverty. When India became a slave, her connections with neighbouring and other Asian countries were broken and new connections with European countries were established. The attainment of independence now had resulted in the renewal of the old relations and in the new context, each one of us should work hard in building the nation."
