This Day That Age
With the arrival of Mr. Chou En-lai, the Chinese Prime Minister, in Geneva on July 12 and of Mr. Anthony Eden, British Foreign Secretary, a few hours earlier, the stage is set for the final and crucial phase of the talks for a ceasefire and peace in Indo-China. Dressed in a tropical lounge suit and blue rain coat, Mr. Chou gave clear indication of his mind in a statement handed to pressmen while the Chinese Premier was shaking hands with Mr. Molotov, the Soviet Foreign Minister. The statement said: "The Geneva conference on the question of restoring peace in Indo-China with resumed participation of Foreign Ministers is about to enter an important phase. It is my belief that, with a conciliatory spirit for seeking peace on the part of all sides concerned, the Geneva conference can speedily accomplish its great task of restoring peace in Indo-China. I hope that each of us will make efforts towards this end." Mr. Chou En-lai's conciliatory statement further enhances the chances of the French Prime Minister, M. Mendes-France beating his self-imposed deadline of obtaining a ceasefire in Indo-China by July 20.
