SINGAPORE: Singapore has reaffirmed its "one China" policy following China's `protest' over the "unofficial visit" to Taiwan by the City State's Deputy Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong. Maintaining that Mr. Lee was "making a private and unofficial visit to Taiwan to meet with friends", Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said "it would be regrettable if bilateral relations" with China "were to be affected by this private visit". According to the MFA, "Singapore has consistently maintained a `one China' policy''. The MFA spokesman said: "We do not support independence for Taiwan. This is our fundamental position. Deputy Prime Minister Lee's private visit does not in any way change this policy, nor does it represent any challenge to China's sovereignty or territorial integrity. Singapore values our close and extensive relations with China''.
