Vijayawada
By Our Staff Reporter
VIJAYAWADA, JULY 13. The city Police Commissioner, T. Krishna Prasad, has mooted a three-pronged strategy to tackle students who indulge in eve-teasing and ragging in colleges. Addressing a students' counselling co-ordination committee meeting at Kakaraparti Bhava Narayana College here on Tuesday, Mr. Prasad said the police department had embarked on an extensive drive to contain student-related problems in educational institutions. "It will be a three-pronged exercise of caution, warning and action. The police will identify and caution students with faulty behaviour. A stern warning will be issued if the situation persists and if the person fails to mend his ways, he will attract stringent action,'' he explained. He said that the Sri Lakshmi murder case had tarnished the image of educational institutions in Vijayawada. "It is for you to dispel the notion, lest students from the city should be rejected by other college managements," he cautioned students. Complimenting the KBN College management for conducting regular interactive sessions with parents, Mr. Prasad said such meetings would help the managements and the parents in knowing the status of their children. He urged the counselling committees to keep in mind even minute details of complaints. "A series of incidents and a subsequent complaint by Sri Lakshmi were swept under the carpet by that college management dubbing them `trivial issues'. This resulted in the ghastly murder'' he felt. The counselling co-ordination committees would comprise students, parents and some prominent senior citizens. The local SI would also be part of the panel but his role would be confined to monitoring the conduct of the erring. Women constables in mufti have been deployed outside colleges and in buses. "We are going slow on this count keeping in view the career of students. But we will not hesitate to invoke sections in the Indian Penal Code against the culprits," he said. The college principal, G. Narsimha Rao, the college committee president, K.A.L Narsimha Rao and the secretary, T. Srinivas, were present.
