`Improper conservation lead to water crisis'

By Our Staff Reporter

CUDDAPAH, JULY 13. Improper water conservation measures led to perennial drought in Cuddapah district, despite the fact that several rivers flowed through it, the Cuddapah Zilla Parishad Chairman, K. Suresh Babu, said on Tuesday.

Addressing a convention on `Water - elixir of life', organised by Yuvajana Seva Sangham at Chinna Chowk panchayat office here, the ZP chief observed that drought and acute drinking water scarcity were the fallout of failure to properly utilise rainwater. The alarming fall in groundwater levels resulted in a crisis in the agriculture sector and conserving water was the bounden duty of every one, he maintained.

The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, was according priority to development of agriculture and irrigation sectors, he asserted. He called upon voluntary organisations to widely organise such conventions and awareness camps in rural areas. Awareness must be created among women, he observed.

The Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, said Gujarat and Rajasthan, which received less rainfall than the district, overcame water scarcity through effective water conservation measures. Judicious use of water and watersheds, checkdams and percolation tanks would help tide over the situation, he added.

The Secretary of C.P. Brown Memorial Trust, J. Hanumath Sastry, said women must be enlightened about the ill effects of wasting water and conserving water through a `Jalayagnam.'

The Chinna Chowk sarpanch, K. Jayasri, the STEP Officer, B. Maheswara Reddy, the Cuddapah MRO, Venkateswarlu, the Yuvajana Seva Sangham president, M. Chalapathi Rao, the observer of Deccan Development Society, Nageswara Reddy, and the Nehru Yuva Kendra Coordinator, Babu Reddy, also took part.
