SRINAGAR, JULY 13. The Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister, Mangat Ram Sharma, today escaped unhurt in a grenade attack by militants. Six people, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police, were injured. The Kashmir Freedom Force, a little-known outfit, has owned the responsibility for the attack. Despite tight security on the eve of Martyr's Day, the militants hurled a grenade at Mr. Sharma's cavalcade when he came out of the Pradesh Congress office. He was about to go for the inauguration of the first flyover in the City by the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. "It missed his vehicle, fell on the road and exploded, resulting in injuries to the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Haseeb Mughal, a Sub-Inspector and four civilians," a police spokesman said. Mr. Mughal has been flown to Chennai for treatment after local doctors said his eyes had been damaged badly. "There are many enemies of peace, but they can do nothing as long as majority of the people support the peace movement," Mr. Sharma said later. Mr. Sayeed and his Cabinet colleagues paid their respects in the morning at the martyr's graveyard in downtown Srinagar. Leaders of the National Conference addressed a meeting in the afternoon. Police arrested the Democratic Freedom Party chief, Shabir Shah, and other leaders at Khanyar, but released them later.
