New `jaundice' cases surface

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JULY 13. As many as 13 people in Dalmia House and two in Birla House on Tees January Marg are reportedly down with jaundice after drinking water supplied by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). And while the civic body has reportedly said that the water supply here was free from any contamination, laboratory checks conducted by the family through a private company indicated contamination.

The incident comes close on the heels of the contamination at Kerala House where 30 employees were taken ill and diagnosed with jaundice after drinking contaminated water.

The Dalmia House residents claim that the problem began some 25 days ago. "We had complained to the NDMC and told them about the problem, but their test showed no contamination. But we conducted a test at a private lab and the results showed the contamination was there in the entire stretch,'' claimed a resident.

Meanwhile, reiterating his advice for steering clear of monsoon-related ailments, the former president of the Delhi Medical Association, Anil Bansal, said: "Water borne ailments are on the rise and people should not drink water from hand-pump, not use ice bought from the market or drink water without boiling. The virus survives and thrives at room temperature and can be killed by boiling water.''
