VISAKHAPATNAM, JULY 13. The girls' convening committee of the Student Federation of India (SFI) appealed to the authorities to punish the accused in the Sri Lakshmi murder case, Manohar, without delay. Participating in a discussion against violence on women and girl students in the backdrop of Sri Lakshmi's murder, the committee's district assistant convenor, L. Chandana, said this case should not go the "Balakrishna way". LIC Working Women's zonal convenor, M. Padmaja, feared that Srilakhsmi's murder could shut the doors to education for many girls. Retired professor of sociology in Andhra University, Indira Devi, felt that all should react to violence against women. Psychiatrist, N.N. Raju, stated that only by bringing about a change in society could such murders be prevented. The Citizens' Welfare Association leader, Suresh, suggested training to girls in self-defence and counselling to students. Former coordinator of Purna Siksha Abhiyan, Renu Gupta, and president of the local chapter of All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA), P. Mani, spoke.
