VISAKHAPATNAM, JULY 13. It's no ordinary jigsaw puzzle for the residents of Woodyard Street in the Old Town. They face hell everyday while crossing the drain in front of their homes. Even when there is no rain, the clogging in the drain makes water flow on to the road. And during the rainy season, the water makes an easy entry into their homes. Even if it rains for five minutes, water up to a level of three to four feet can be seen in the drain compounding the problem of the residents of this area. ``We have made several representations to the civic authorities but no corrective steps are forthcoming to find out a permanent solution to the problem,'' says Sudhakar Jagarapu, an employee in a private firm. Vehicles are seldom found during rainy season in the street as they get struck in the overflowing drain water. Even if drain water is pumped out or flows to other areas, the silt gets accumulated obstructing free flow. The main problem for irregular cleaning of the drain by the sanitation workers is due to its blocking by 12 to 15 small shops (wooden bunks) leaving little space for them to take up ''operation drain out.'' The residents express the hope that the new Municipal Commissioner, N. Srikant, who is keen on ensuring neatness in the city, would pay a visit to Woodyard Street (fifth ward) and resolve the menace caused by the drain.
