Report on status of women to be released soon

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, JULY 13. A comprehensive document on `status of women in Tamil Nadu,' being prepared by the Mother Teresa Women's University, Kodaikanal, is nearing completion and it will be released in a couple of weeks.

The status report will be presented to the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, to apprise her of the trends in the development of womenfolk, the Vice-Chancellor, Ananthavalli Mahadevan, said.

Talking to The Hindu here today, she said the status report was a joint project of the university and the Tamil Nadu Women Development Corporation. It covered all aspects of women.

Dr. Mahadevan said the report, which would be brought out as a book, would serve as a comprehensive document throwing light on the present status of women after the socio-economic changes.

Education and employment for women, their workplace conditions, violence and crimes against women and the urban-rural scenario were some of the subjects dealt with in the document, she said, adding that the experts were now analysing the data collected for the past one year.

To promote women leadership, the Teresa University was planning to organise a seminar inviting all women Vice-Chancellors in the country to discuss women empowerment. She said the enrolment of women in colleges had reached a substantial number and it was time to look at women leadership, which should be the next stage, the Vice-Chancellor said.

The next step in women development was to bring them into governance.

"The bottlenecks in women leadership and professional success will be analysed to find out solutions," she said.

The academic programmes had been going on well and the external Ph. D. programme of the university was receiving good response. The new courses of the university were being consolidated at present, she said.

"The biotechnology course in medicinal plants is a big draw for us and we developed 20 acres of medicinal and aromatic plants," Dr. Ananthavalli said.
