HYDERABAD, JULY 13. While arrangements have been made for the by-election to the Jangamet division of the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH) on Wednesday, voting by 29,358 electors will be on the conventional lines, through the ballot papers and ballot boxes. Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) that were extensively used in the recent general elections will not be pressed into service as they belonged to the Election Commission (EC). The State Election Commission (SEC) is in charge of the local bodies' poll and it does not own any EVMs. Election officials have said that though the SEC sought permission for using the available and surplus number of EVMs in the local bodies' poll, there has been no positive response from the EC. It may be recalled that the Jangamet by-poll has been necessitated following the death of the Telugu Desam Party's, B. Laxman. His wife, B. Shanti, is contesting the election on the TDP ticket. While Congress' V. Surya Naik is in the race, the TRS candidate, S. Lalu Naik, withdrew from the contest. Others in the fray are Deshya Naik of the Majlis, V. Shanker of Majlis Bachao Tehreek and V. Pandu Naik of the Bahujan Samaj Party. Four Independents are also in the fray.
