NEW DELHI, JULY 13. Three alleged criminals, who mainly targeted petrol pumps, were arrested following a brief encounter with the Special Staff of the South-West Delhi police at Dwarka this Monday. A revolver, two country-made pistols and eight live cartridges were recovered from their possession. Acting on a tip-off that some criminals were planning to target a petrol pump at Dwarka, Sub-Inspectors Rajkumar, Ravinder Tyagi and Shiv Shankar of the Special Staff mounted a vigorous hunt for them. Having spotted three of the suspects near the Dwarka Sector IV market, the police asked them to surrender. However, the accused whipped out firearms and opened fire at the police party. The police fired in retaliation and subsequently overpowered them. During interrogation, they identified themselves as Surender, Rajesh and Bittoo. They disclosed that they were planning to target a petrol pump at Dwarka Sector VII as they could easily escape from there. The police said the accused are involved in at least eight snatching and four robbery cases. Surender told the police that he was initiated into the world of crime in 1997 after he came in contact with some criminals. He has committed at least two petrol pump robberies in Haryana and was arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police in October last. Surender was previously involved in 10 cases of murder, attempt to murder, car-thefts and robbery in Delhi and Haryana. During interrogation, Rajesh disclosed that he came in contact with Surender in 1997 and joined him to commit petrol pump robberies. He was previously involved in four cases of murder, assault and robbery. In the past few weeks, he has committed more than eight cases of robbery and snatching. His accomplice, Bittoo, had shot dead his uncle to avenge his father's killing. He was arrested in that case and lodged in Tihar where he came in contact with Surender and Rajesh.
