This Day That Age
The United Nations Economic and Social Council approved a draft convention on July 13 which would give all women the right to retain their own nationality when married to a foreigner. Under the 12-article draft convention, a woman will have the right to acquire her husband's nationality at her own request subject only to limitations imposed by law in the interests of security and public policy. Women could retain their own nationality as well. This would not be affected automatically by divorce, by later renunciation by the husband's nationality or by change of the husband's nationality during the marriage. The draft will be circulated to all U.N. member-States. Observations must be submitted to the Secretary-General by January 1, 1955 for consideration later in the year at the ninth session of the Commission on the Status of Women.
