Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to the editorial, `Disturbing unilateralism' (July 14). You have rightly criticised the Punjab Assembly's decision to terminate all river agreements and accords without going into the pros and cons of the issue. Unfortunately, water has become a bone of contention among our States. Punjab should have discussed the issue with the other States concerned and tried to find an amicable solution. Politics should not take centre stage in all issues, especially when sharing of water is concerned.
R. Muralikumar,
* * * Sir, As pointed out in the editorial, such actions strike at the root of federalism. If left unresolved the problem can snowball into a major crisis.
B. Suresh Kumar,
* * * Sir, The passing of the bill by the Punjab Assembly at a time when the country is heading towards inter-linking rivers is an unhealthy sign. The Centre must come up with an effective legislation to prevent such situations.
E. Pavuna Sundari,
* * * Sir, Whatever be the compulsions, Punjab's action sets a bad precedent for other riparian States in the ongoing `water sharing' processes.
M. Jagadish,
* * * Sir, If all States start acting the way Punjab has done, the federal system of government will lose all meaning.
Raghunath Padiki,
* * * Sir, The crisis holds out a lesson for us. Though we as humans are basically selfish, we should all try to be a bit altruistic for the sake of the welfare of all.
G. David Milton,
* * * Sir, Punjab will surely face the wrath of the Supreme Court.
Akhil Kumar,
