Letters to the Editor
Sir, The problems the former Defence Minister, George Fernandes, faced on two occasions at airports in the United States reflect the arrogance of the American authorities. Mr. Fernandes should not have stepped on American soil for the second time without an apology from none less than the U.S. President, George W. Bush.
S. Himesh,
* * * Sir, Can we imagine a similar search being ordered on the U.S. Defence Secretary in India? There will be uproar in the U.S. the self-styled custodian of human values, liberty, good manners and what-have-you, not to speak of diplomatic etiquette followed by a strong protest.
Wg. Cdr. (retd.) S.C. Kapoor,
* * * Sir, If this is the way senior Indian Ministers on official visits to the U.S. are treated, then one can imagine the fate of ordinary citizens.
Anirudh Govind Rajan,
* * * Sir, It is ironical that Indian politicians, who are a law unto themselves at home, silently suffer the humiliation meted out to them abroad.
T.V. Shivananda,
