A new beginning

Sir, — As stated in the editorial, `Reviving a great tradition' (July 13), the Kerala Institute for Mathematics could be a new beginning.

The extent of research in basic sciences is weighed on the basis of quantity and quality of papers published in reputed journals.

Creating new institutes with the focus on advanced research will help improve standards.
