Lt. Governor's nod awaited on reservation

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, JULY 14. The Lt. Governor's approval was awaited on a cabinet proposal to provide reservations for the Most Backward Classes in educational institutions, the Welfare Minister M. Chandirakasu, told the Pondicherry Assembly today.

Replying to a call attention motion tabled by R.V. Janakiraman and R. Siva (DMK) highlighting the grievances of the MBCs, he said the Council of Ministers had considered the issue at a meeting on June 19 and agreed that the MBCs be extended the benefit of reservation. The proposal had since been forwarded to Lt Governor.

As far reservation for the MBCs in Government services and jobs, the Minister said the Government had proposed quotas for the 11 castes categorised under the MBC list in the Union Territory.

He said the Government had written to the Union Home Ministry to get a law enacted by Parliament, as Pondicherry, being a Union Territory, was not competent to pass a law in this regard. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy told the Assembly today that the Government had earmarked Rs 60 crores out of plan funds for improving the lot of the scheduled castes.

The allocation was made under the Special Component plan.

He said that a committee under his chairmanship had also been formed to review implementation of schemes for the welfare of scheduled castes.

In other developments, members cutting across party affiliation today urged the Government to keep watch on the working of private hospitals attached to self-financing medical colleges as there had been a rise in complaints of patients being held to ransom by the managements.

The Health Minister, E. Valsaraj, said a panel would be formed to monitor private hospitals in the Territory.
