Sanskrit course to commence on Monday

By Our Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA, JULY 14. A.N. Vejayendra Rao, coordinator of the Sanskrit Sandhya Kendras set up by Sanksrit Bharathi and the Tarunodaya Sanskrit Seva Samsthe, said here on Wednesday that informal teaching of Sanskrit by the kendras had received a good response from people.

Addressing a press conference here, he noted that the informal teaching of Sanskrit, which started in 2002, had become popular among the people.

The kendra now had its branches in all major cities, he said and added that this was indicative of the interest among the people in learning Sanskrit through the three-month crash course.

He said the kendras were being run in association with the Rotary Club (North), Sri Adichunchanagiri Education Trust, the Goud Saraswat Brahmin Samaj, the Sharada Sanskrit Seva Samsthe, the Consumers' Society of Kallahalli, and the Gurukul of Navile. He said that of the 10 centres located in Shimoga, six were entitled to an annual grant from the Rashtriya Sankrit Samsthan.

Mr. Rao said Shimoga district had the second largest number of Sanskrit kendras (18) in the State after Bangalore, which had 20 kendras.

He announced that persons above 16 years of age irrespective of their caste or sex could join the crash course conducted by the kendras.

This course would enable them to speak, write, and read Sanskrit.

Classes of one-and-a-half hour duration would be held every day.

Those who completed the course would receive certificates from the Rashtriya Sanskrit Samsthan, he said.

He also said that those who completed five courses would be conferred with the title, "Shastry."

He said the course, which would commence on Monday, was being offered in all the 10 kendras in the district.
