CHITRADURGA, JULY 14. H. Anjaneya, Bharama Sagara MLA, has suggested that action should be taken against traders who cheat farmers by selling substandard seeds and fertilizers. Participating in the Karnataka Development Programme meeting here on Tuesday, he complimented the Agriculture Department for making meticulous arrangements to provide seeds to farmers at concessional rates.Mr. Anjaneya asked the lead bank managers to take steps to settle the farmers' crop insurance amount as soon as possible. There were still many poor people who had not received either yellow cards or the Antyodaya cards, even though there were 2,25,690 yellow cardholders and 26,128 Antyodaya cardholders in the district, he said. He also asked the Deputy Director of Food and Civil Supplies to cancel the cards of ineligible cardholders and give the same to the needy. Officers assured him that solving the drinking water problem in Muttenahatti village that came under Bharama Sagara constituency was on their priority list. H. Nagaraj, the president of the zilla panchayat, pointed out that books and uniforms had still not been supplied to schools. He said that deputing a few teachers from schools that were over-staffed could solve the problem of shortage of teachers in the schools. Narayana Swamy, the Chief Executive Officer, asked the officers to utilise the grants released to the department and involve the elected representative in their works.
Funds for development
Seshadri, member of the High Power Committee on Redressal of Regional Imbalances, told the meeting that Rs. 600 crore was needed to develop Chitradurga district. He said that except Chitradurga taluk, all other taluks in the district were backward. Hosadurga taluk ranked 142 in a list 175 backward taluks in the State, he said. The most backward taluk in the district needed Rs. 160 crore for development, he said. Chitradurga was a drought-prone district without any employment opportunities, Dr. Seshadri said. He also said that a priority sector had to be identified. The district would receive Rs. 45 crore under the national SUM Vikas plan, he said. Elected representatives and officers should plan the proper utilisation of funds. Drought relief, soil conservation, enhancing the level of underground water table, and specific local problems should be addressed while implementing the scheme, Dr. Sheshadri said He pointed out that a grant of nearly Rs. 440 crore would help the development of five taluks in the district. Shivashankar, Deputy Secretary; B.K. Manjunath, Planning Officer, and all district-level officers participated in the review meeting.
