Suggestions to improve police force

By Our Staff Reporter

THRISSUR, JULY 14. Socio-cultural activists and retired police personnel presented their suggestions before the Commission for Police Performance and Accountability, formed by the State Government to submit suggestions for improving the working of the police force, during its maiden district-level sitting here today.

The two Commission members, the former DGP, K. Rajagopalan Nair, and the former Additional Chief Secretary and former Calicut University Vice Chancellor, T.N. Jayachandran, participated in the sitting.

Giving more facilities to the police force, reducing their frustrations, ensuring cordial behaviour to complainants at police stations, giving receipts to complaints, encouraging the police to adopt a friendly attitude towards the public and inclusion of psychological courses in the police training were some of the suggestions that were submitted during the sitting.

There were also suggestions to prevent the politicisation of the police force, curtailing the freedom of the police to form associations, educating the public on the laws and activities of the police, displaying the duty chart and first information reports (FIRs) in the stations and formation of district-level cells for probing complaints against the police.

The Commission also made it clear that the public can send their opinions and complaints in this regard by post to Justice K.T. Thomas, Commission for Police Performance and Accountability, PWD Rest House Compound, Kottayam-39.

However, no personal complaints will be entertained by the Commission. The Commission is specifically enquiring into the positive and negative impact of the decision of the Government to give more freedom to the police. It is the performance of the police in 2002 and 2003 that will be mainly evaluated by the Commission.
