VISAKHAPATNAM, JULY 14. Tuesday's low pressure system over the west-central Bay of Bengal is likely to turn into a depression by Thursday. ``This is a welcome scenario because it will give long spells of rain for another two days. If the system develops fast, it dissipates quickly. However, the present one is developing slowly and as such rain can be predicted,'' the Director of the Cyclone Warning Centre, J.V.M. Naidu, told The Hindu on Wednesday evening. ``This is also the first system this season with the typical characteristics of a monsoon system. The low pressures that are seen in the summer, or pre-monsoon and post-monsoon are likely to develop into cyclones,'' he said. The south and western cloud clusters were seen from the system centre extending up to about 700 km to 800 km, which indicated a likelihood of a large amount of rainfall, Dr. Naidu said. Irrespective of where the system crossed the coast, either in Orissa or West Bengal, the State in general and its coast in particular would receive good rain, thanks to the huge area under the influence of the system.
Our Special Correspondent in Hyderabad adds: Yellandu in Khammam district recorded the heaviest rainfall for the day at 11 cm. The Director for the State Met Office, C. V. V. Bhadram, said the low pressure area lying in the west central Bay of Bengal off the north Andhra and south Orissa coast, was likely to intensify and become more marked tomorrow activating the monsoon which was already "vigorous" in Coastal Andhra and Telangana. The met office issued heavy rainfall warning for the south coastal districts of Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore and parts of Khammam and Warangal.
