SHIMOGA, JULY 14. The Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS) State unit, A.M.R. Kotraiah, said on Wednesday that the NSS was not only a voluntary social service organisation but also an effective means for the youth to shape their personality. Speaking as the chief guest at the valedictory function of the NSS annual camp at Kuvempu University here, he said the fact that more and more students were joining the NSS only spoke of its growing popularity. The NSS had involved itself in schemes aimed at social welfare, he said and added that it was also participating in development works for the benefit of the community. He called upon the participants of the camp to work for the welfare of society. Regretting that the youth were not showing interest in the protection of environment, Mr. Kotraiah said that in this regard, the NSS volunteers had proved to be an exception as they had displayed an extraordinary love for the environment. The NSS had realised its duty towards the environment and was working in this regard, he added. The Vice-Chancellor of the university, K. Chidananda Gowda, presided over the function. The Registrar, Praveenchandra Pandey; the Joint Director of Collegiate Education, K. Srihari; and H.S. Suresh were present. K.S. Nagesh welcomed the gathering.
