Monsoon picking up in Dakshina Kannada

MANGALORE, JULY 14. Finally, it looks like Dakshina Kannada will have normal rainfall as predicted by the Indian Meteorological Department. After a lull of 20 days, the monsoon seems to be picking up in the district.

According to the district agriculture office, the district has received an average rainfall of 92.68 mm in the past one week as against 152.1 mm rainfall recorded during the corresponding period last year.

The rainfall recorded in the taluks is as follows: Mangalore 122.6 mm, Buntwal 89 mm, Puttur 67.1 mm, and Sullia 112.3 mm.

With sowing entering a crucial stage, the farmers are now looking forward to intermittent rain, which will provide for better assimilation of fertilizers by the crops.

According to the district agriculture office, the farmers have used a judicious mix of organic and chemical fertilizers this time. Initial reports of a normal monsoon had left the farmers in a quandary for leaving the terrace fields unprepared for sowing.

But with the monsoon picking up in the district, the farmers are back in the fields.

The agriculture office says that 25 per cent of the fields have used organic fertilizers. In a year with a normal monsoon, the district produces 2,800 tonnes of organic manure as against the use of 20,000 tonnes of chemical fertilizers.

This year, only 2,000 tonnes of organic fertilizers has been produced.

Also, many compost production tanks have received less inputs, which has resulted in a decrease in production.

Green garbage, one of the main inputs in the production of compost, is being disposed off.
