Hubli
By Our Special Correspondent
HUBLI, JULY 14. The Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) on Wednesday decided to share the posts of the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor of the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC), in the election to be held on Thursday. S.R. More, Minister for Municipal Administration, and Basavaraj Horatti, MLC, made an announcement to this effect, bringing down the curtain on the controversy that was reigning for quite sometime now. While the Congress had its own internal problems to deal with on the issue, the situation became complicated with the Janata Dal (S) insisting that it should be given the Mayor's post. The election for the two posts and that of the chairpersons of four standing committees of the corporation is being held tomorrow in compliance with a directive of the High Court. According to a formula that has been worked out, the Congress will get the post of the Mayor while the Janata Dal (S) will get that of the Deputy Mayor. The posts of chairpersons of the four standing committees will be shared equally between the two parties, while the Janata Dal (S) will get the post of the chairperson of the Tax Appeals Committee. Mr. More and Mr. Horatti told presspersons here today that both the parties would finalise the names of the candidates for the two posts. Asked whether it was not a setback for the Janata Dal (S) which was demanding the post of the Mayor, or, as an alternative, the chairmanship of all the standing committees, Mr. Horatti said the formula used at the State level had been adopted to share the posts. As the major partner of the alliance, the Congress was entitled to the post of the Mayor, he added. Mr. More said no party observers would be present tomorrow when the election would take place because of the unanimity in the party ranks. There was no groupism in the party, he maintained. The Congress is likely to filed Mangalagouri Agnihotri of Dharwad for the post of the Mayor and the Janata Dal (S), Fahemida Killedar for that of the Deputy Mayor.
