TTD to introduce single token system

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI, JULY 14. The TTD will shortly phase out the multi-category `Kankanam' system and introduce in its place a single token system to end the confusion being caused among pilgrims with regard to the darshan of Lord Venkateswara.

Under the existing arrangement, three categories of `Kankanams'-- Rs.40, Rs.50/- and Rs.60/- are being used.

The `Kankanams' are computerised and bar-coded wrist-bands being tied to pilgrims at the ticket counters, indicating the possible date and time as to when they would get their turn for darshan.

The TTD now proposes to retain only the Rs.50/- category and do away with the other two with effect from August 1.

Beside the confusion created by the multiple rates, the problem is further being compounded by the variable number of laddus that are to be distributed to the pilgrims.

For example, a pilgrim buying a Rs.60/- special darshan ticket is entitled to get three laddus without paying any additional money. Similarly, in the case of the Rs.50/- ticket, it is two laddus and one in the case of the Rs.40/- category `kankanam.' Further, this is said to be causing an enormous burden on the TTD in the preparation and distribution of the laddus, which are in great demand.
