ANANTAPUR, JULY 14. The district Collector, Y.V. Anuradha, has promised to work out an amicable solution to the ongoing tussle between handloom and powerloom sectors. The assurance came at a meeting held with representatives of both the sectors on Wednesday. The two sectors were at loggerheads over violation of the Supreme Court ruling, reserving 11 designs of cloth to the handloom sector by the powerloom sector. The State Government, too, issued an enforcement act to check the violation, if any. The Collector warned of serious action against powerloom owners who violate the ban on 11 designs purely meant for the handloom sector. She also directed the Assistant Director of Handlooms and Textiles, Yanadi Reddy, not to sanction permission to new powerlooms. She stated that the handloom sector was the second highest employment generation activity after agriculture in the district. To settle their problems with the powerloom sector she convened a meeting. Leaders of handloom weavers' unions explained how workers and master weavers had been suffering due to violation of the ban on making 11 designs of cloth by powerloom owners. The Collector asked enforcement officials to implement the ban in its true spirit.
