Radhakrishnan (1983 batch), J.K. Tripathy (1985 batch) and Prateep V. Philip (1987 batch) were felicitated under a newly-launched programme at the Academy to felicitate police officers. The Academy Director, Ganeshwar Jha, said the awards were in recognition of their innovative practices in community policing. Mr. Radhakrishnan was chosen for handling the communal problem in Coimbatore in 1998 and ushering in peace by constituting area committees, city vigilance committees, police boys clubs in slums, women helplines and traffic volunteer squads. Mr. Tripathy won the award for launching beat-officers system, complaint box system, wide area network and also for women empowerment and slum adoption programme. Mr. Philip won the award for introducing the concept of `Friends of police' and developing it into an internally-recognised model of community policing to act as a bridge between the police and the public.
