Perambalur
By Our Staff Reporter
PERAMBALUR, JULY 14. The need for desilting the British-built George Channel, implementation of beautification plans and the proper upkeep of Puliankulam tank in Perambalur town were some of the issues taken up for discussion at the first meeting of the recently upgraded Perambalur municipal council held here today. Perambalur, headquarters of the district, was downgraded from town panchayat status to village panchayat status on June 14, but was subsequently elevated as Grade III municipality. The chairman of the council, G. Sakthi (DMK), sought the cooperation of councillors and officials for fulfilling the long-felt needs of the citizens of the town. P. Arjunan, an independent councillor, said steps should be taken immediately for desilting George Channel to provide irrigation facilities through system tanks in and around Perambalur from Aranarai to Thuraimangalam tanks. The channel constructed in 1911, had gathered silt and has been in disuse. Though steps were taken to restore the channel last year, the proposal had been given up owing to the paucity of funds. The channel would not only irrigate the fields but also help stabilise the water table of the town, he said, urging the chairman to initiate steps. S. Neela (AIADMK) said the Puliankulam tank situated in the heart of the town was being converted into a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Open defecation was another health and environmental hazard. She demanded immediate steps for its proper upkeep. K.V.S. Mani (DMK) said steps should be taken for construction of a full-fledged building for the municipality, taking into account its future upgradation and expansion. N. Subramanian (AIADMK) pleaded for steps for provision of better road facilities in all wards. As the town was located at a strategic point on the national highway, effective steps should be taken for its beautification. To start with, a welcome arch should be erected on the border of the town. Mr. Sakthi assured steps for creation of basic infrastructure, the beautification of the town and the other needs of the people. A cross-section of the councillors observed that since the local body had been upgraded into a municipality, greater thought should be given to its functioning and council meetings should be held periodically.
