A valuable addition to Thanjavur

A new addition to Thanjavur, which has, of late, become one of the important higher education centres in the State, is the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI) National College. `Quality Master of Business Administration (MBA)' is the promise made by the college to students. "Our ultimate aim is to raise the standard compared with the all-India level," says A. Susairaj, the Principal. The college started functioning on July 1. ICFAI was established in 1984 with the objective of offering educational programmes to students, executives and professionals in India. It launched the Chartered Financial Analysts programme initially and in 1995 the ICFAI Business School was established to offer the MBA programme with specialisations like Marketing, Finance, Human Resources Management, Information Technology, and Systems. Laurels earned by the college at the national level are many according to R. Satyanarayana, the Administrative Officer of the college.

The Government of Tripura, conferred a special `State University' status upon the institution and granted 25 acres of land to establish a Centre for Excellence. The Madras Management Association (MMA), Chennai, awarded the MMA Award for Managerial excellence to ICFAI Business School, Chennai, for keen managerial thinking, action, and demonstrable results to companies and institutions. ICFAI Business School, Hyderabad, has secured the twelfth rank among the top hundred business schools in India according to a survey conducted by the Cosmode Management and Research Centre, headed by Dharani P. Sinha, former Principal, Administrative Staff College, Hyderabad.

According to Prof. Susairaj, apart from the regular programme, to further the objectives of the university, the Thanjavur National College, located at 2883, MK Moopanar road, Thanjavur, conducts seminars, workshops on communication skills, personality development programmes and quiz programmes for the benefit of students of Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts. "Internet facility is provided to students from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. everyday so they could browse and download information," Prof. Susairaj said.

Though the college has already started its academic programme, admission for the second batch of the 2004-06 programme ends only on July 25, 2004.

Speaking at the inauguration of BIBS and Infotek Associations of the Department of Biotechnology and the Department of Bio-Informatics at Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College, Perambalur, he said biotechnology accounted for several branches of studies and that many of them were still unexplored.

He said the prospect of researches and studies in biotechnology and bio-informatics were brighter and assured students a lucrative career. He spoke on `the double helix 50 years on ...' and on topics such as DNA, reproductive biology, and gene transfer mechanism.

Spiritualism is not just renunciation or even pilgrimages. One can have fun and enjoy life and still be spiritual if the person is in control of him/herself.

Sounds midway between spiritualism and materialism? A tough stand to take. But the Madras High Court judge, M. Karpagavinayakam, addressing students of Sri Sarada Niketan College of Science for Women, Karur, recently, could juggle both to suit the tastes of his young listeners and convince them too.

Mr. Karpagavinayakam, lecturing on `Spiritualism and Youth', defined a youth as one who refuses to give up commitment and energy to reach a goal, despite growing in age.

Students should be service-minded, he reminded, adding that, "service sans devotion is blind while devotion without service is lame." As his listeners were students, the learned judge could not desist from talking about discipline. He said discipline was a must for evolving a well-developed personality.

The Correspondent, Srimad Atmananda, gave the benedictory address and the Principal, B.R. Dwaraki, introduced the chief guest.
