CHENNAI, JULY 14. Alert residents helped prevent a robbery at their neighbour's home. But the culprit slipped away under the cover of darkness at Natesan Nagar in Virugambakkam last night even as policemen and Friends of Police volunteers chased him. According to police, the culprit gained entry into the house of a government employee by breaking open the door using a crowbar. He then broke open an almirah, and put 100 sovereigns of jewels into his bag when the residents were away. Meanwhile, noticing a motorcycle standing unattended in their street for a long time, residents called up a beat constable on his mobile phone. Residents, the constable and members of the Friends of Police in the locality gathered at the spot and started making enquiries. Noticing the group patrolling in the street, the culprit scaled the compound wall of the house where he had broken in and jumped into another house. He dropped the bag containing the jewels, the crowbar and another suitcase he was carrying with him and fled the spot. Police and the volunteers pursued the culprit but in vain. The motorcycle standing unattended was used by the culprit, police said and added they were conducting further investigation. Beat constables and Friends of Police volunteers in the area have been given mobile phones by members of the residents' welfare association. The jewellery was found intact and restored to its owner.
