Kalam's vision leads them

By Our Staff Reporter

The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, during an interactive session with students at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday as the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, looks on.

HYDERABAD, JULY 14. "I want to see one billion people of my nation smiling." That was the reaction of the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, when a student asked him as to what crossed his mind when he was sworn in President.

Inspired by the President's words, Harindra Madhav, studying in 10th class at Hyderabad Public School, Ramanthapur, said he wanted to become a politician -- a leader who would think of people's development and bring about a smile on their faces. "Have an aim, sweat it out and don't get bogged down by hurdles," Dr. Kalam advised Madhav.

The President was interacting with Lead India 2020 Foundation school and college students at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday as he spoke on `Path to India's development.' "Learning gives creativity, creativity leads to thinking, thinking provides knowledge and knowledge makes one great," he told students. Dreaming was important for young minds. "The great scientist and my mentor, Vikram Sarabhai, dreamt of India designing satellites in 1970 and worked towards it. Today it is a reality," he noted. "You need to study our history and imbibe the qualities of great men of our country," he advised students. To a question from Satish Kumar, a student, the President said moral science should be an integral part of school education. A question from Naga Sarini, a girl student, stumped Dr. Kalam for a while. "My friend wants me to cheat in exams like her to get good marks. What should I do?" to which Dr. Kalam told her not to follow her friend's advice and said righteousness was important in one's life.
