HYDERABAD, JULY 14. Come August 1, the traffic police will seize vehicles driven without a driving licence (DL). "Section 207(1) of Motor Vehicle Act empowers us to seize a vehicle if a person drives it without a DL. The vehicle shall be released after production of the licence," the Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Tejdeep Menon, has said. Addressing a press conference here, Mrs. Menon said that 25,000 driving licences seized from 1995 onwards for violations of various Acts were in custody of the police as licensees had failed to turn up to pay the fine amounts. "That means 25,000 persons are using vehicles without DLs. The number of such erring drivers maybe more, giving scope for violation of rules and resulting in accidents," she observed. She said it could lead to chaos if vehicles driven without DLs went unchecked. The police would organise a one-week mela from July 16 to return the 25,000 seized DLs to respective owners on payment of the fine. Those wishing to take back their documents should come to the Traffic Control Room (TCR) opposite Public Gardens along with the challan slip issued then. Those who lost their challan slip could bring ration card or residence certificate for identity proof.
