`New service tax applicable from July 9'

VISAKAHPATNAM JULY 14. New services defined in the Union Budget are liable to payment of service tax with effect from July 9.

According to a press release from the office of Central Excise and Customs here, service tax was now payable on mandap keeper services provided by hotels when catering was also extended, maintenance or repair service provided in relation to computers, customer systems or computer peripherals, commission agents falling under business auxilliary services other than those dealing in agricultural products, broadcasting service provided by cable operators and services in relation to safe deposit lockers offered by security agencies.

Pointing out that abatement in respect of tour operators was reduced to 60 per cent, the release said similar facility was also extended to rent-a-cab scheme operator service.

The release said the trade could seek clarification by contacting the Service Tax Cell on telephone No. 2568947.
