VISAKHAPATNAM, JULY 14. The district committee of Students' Federation of India (SFI) staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Wednesday demanding release of pending scholarships. In a memorandum submitted to the Collector on the occasion, the SFI district secretary, L. Lakshmana Rao, noted that several thousands of students who depended on scholarships for their studies suffered as they were not sanctioned in time and at times did not reach them. There was need to hike scholarship in view of soaring prices, he said. ``Of the 12,500 applications from backward classes students, only 7,500 are given scholarships. While Rs. 7.2 crores is needed for scholarships, the Government is sanctioning only Rs. 3.5 crores,'' he claimed, and alleged that the Government was not sincere in implementing student welfare measures. He demanded sanction of scholarships to all eligible students, increasing the scholarship amounts and cosmetic charges, and release of all pending scholarships.
