Teen arrested

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JULY 14. A 17-year-old boy has been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police for allegedly stealing vehicles. The accused, along with his accomplice, began stealing vehicles in order to pay for their debts while betting on billiards and snooker. Two stolen vehicles were recovered from his possession.

According to the police, Constable Bharat Bhushan of the Special Team of Crime Branch had got a tip-off about a young suspect who wanted to dispose of a stolen car and was supposed to come to Refugee camp, Peeragarhi, in West Delhi on Tuesday around 5 p.m. Accordingly, a trap was laid and the accused arrested when he appeared on the scene in a white Maruti car. The car had been stolen from Adarsh Nagar in North-West Delhi on July 9. He also disclosed that he had stolen a Maruti van from Rohini the next day.

All along, his associate, who had earlier been involved in auto-lifting, helped him. Nangloi police had arrested him in 2000 on charges of stealing cars.

During interrogation, the accused revealed that he and his friend used to play snooker and billiards in Paschim Vihar. In course of time, they began placing huge bets on the game and consequently used to win and lose a large sum. Recently, they had lost considerable amount of money. His associate then convinced him to join him in auto-lifting, earn money by disposing of the stolen cars and pay back the debts.

Three dacoits nabbed

Three alleged criminals were arrested following a brief encounter with the police at Harsh Vihar in North-East Delhi on Tuesday. Three country-made pistols, nine live cartridges and two cars were recovered from them. Three of their accomplices managed to flee.

Acting on a tip-off that some criminals coming from neighbouring Ghaziabad would enter Delhi from Sewa Dham Marg in a stolen Maruti car, the police laid a trap. Around 9-30 p.m., they spotted the vehicle that was being followed by a Maruti Esteem car. The police intercepted both the cars, following which a person alighted from the Esteem and opened fire at them.
