TIRUCHI JULY 14. The Secretary, Rural Development, Shanta Sheela Nair, yesterday inspected the toilets-linked biogas plants set up with the government subsidy at Ayyampatti in the Tiruverumbur union and urged the local residents of the village to go for more such plants. The District Rural Development Agency was implementing a project of setting up toilets-linked biogas plant at Ayyampatti. The Government provided a subsidy of Rs. 3,300 Rs. 500 for the construction of the toilet and Rs.2,800 for the biogas plant. It was planned to set up the plants in 52 households and the DRDA had completed the works on 28 plants. The local residents of the village were taken to Odanthurai in Coimbatore district, where similar plants were functioning successfully, to get first-hand information. Ms. Nair spoke to the local residents in whose households the plants had already been set up and enquired about the benefits. She urged the people to take full advantage of the government's programme and set up similar plants in their households. The Tiruchi Collector, V. Pandian, the Pudukottai Collector, Jatindranath Swain, the Project Officers, DRDA, M. Manohara Singh (Tiruchi) and P. Selvaraj (Pudukottai), the president of the Valavanthankottai panchayat, Abdul Qudus and others accompanied Ms. Nair to the village. Earlier, Ms. Nair held discussions with officials of various departments of both Tiruchi and Pudukottai districts on the progress of the development works and urged them to take effective steps for the completion of all ongoing works in time. Apart from the Collectors, the DROs of Tiruchi and Pudukottai districts, V. Srinivasan and Shobana respectively too participated in the review meeting held at the Collectorate here.

Interacting with SHG members at Mathur in the Virallimalai union yesterday, Ms. Shanta Sheela Nair, has appealed to women's self-help groups (SHGs) to try and market their products in urban centres such as Chennai. She also urged them to avail herself of government schemes for setting up individual house toilets and bio-gas plants. The women SHGs should strive to do away with the practice of open defecation and extend their cooperation in the implementation of the total sanitation programme, she said. Ms.Nair inspected the implementation of development programmes at Neerpalani and other places. She was accompanied by the Collector, Jatindranath Swain, the Project Officer of the District Rural Development Agency, P.Selvarajan, and other senior officials.
