38 stone quarries leased

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, JULY 14. A total of 38 stone quarries out of 61 sites in Madurai district were leased out, fetching the Government revenue of Rs.2.04 crores.

The auction was carried out for the sites located at Madurai north, Madurai south, Melur, Tirumangalam and Vadipatti taluks at the Collectorate here for two days from July 13 and officials awarded the 38 sites at the end of the second day today.

Of the remaining 23 sites, 15 were not likely to be leased, as it would not be feasible to quarry for stones. Earlier, workers from the Othakadai and Yanaimalai sites protested the leasing of the respective sites in their areas claiming that 200 workers were already employed at the sites and their lives would be in jeopardy, if the sites were leased out.

They even staged a road roko but in vain. The sites were leased for a total of Rs.35 lakhs.

The DRO, K. Ayyanar, the Project Officer of DRDA, Krishnasamy, and the Assistant Director of Mines, Shanmugavel, presided over the auction.
